Pamela Geller and Stop the Islamization of America

Role in Islamophobia Network: blogger, author, grassroots organizer, media personality
Stop the Islamization of America, co-founder
American Freedom Defense Initiative, co-founder
Atlas Shrugs, creator Based: New York, New York
Updated: August 2012

Pamela Geller has been described as a “caustic mouthpiece” for the Islamophobia movement. She is the editor of the blog Atlas Shrugs, the executive director of the American Freedom Defense Initiative, and co-founder of the hate group Stop the Islamization of America.

Geller formerly worked as a publisher of the New York Daily News and the New York Observer.

The Atlas Shrugs blog is Geller's primary outlet. In 2010, Paypal severed relations with Atlas Shrugs saying that according to the service’s Acceptable Use Policy, “…PayPal may not be used to send or receive payments for items that promote hate, violence, racial intolerance.”i

The hate blog was cited frequently by Anders Breivik, the terrorist who murdered seventy-seven people in Norway in 2011.

Geller’s organization Stop the Islamization of America (SIOA) is designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC),ii which also named Geller as a member of the “anti-Muslim inner circle.” The United States Patent and Trademark Office refused to grant SIOA a trademark because: "The applied-for mark refers to Muslims in a disparaging manner because by definition it implies that conversion or conformity to Islam is something that needs to be stopped or caused to cease."
SIOA is an outgrowth of a similar group in Europe that seeks to block the construction of mosques on that continent. Its sister organization, Stop the Islamization of Europe, "considers Islamophobia to be the height of common sense."

Another SIOA co-founder, Robert Spencer, has been identified by the independent national media watch group Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) as one of "Islamophobia's Dirty Dozen" who systematically "spread fear, bigotry, and misinformation." In its report, FAIR said: "By selectively ignoring inconvenient Islamic texts and commentaries, Spencer concludes that Islam is innately extremist and violent."

Geller and Spencer also co-founded another hate group, American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), with an individual who says he is an admirer of the founder of two terrorist organizations and who advocated mass murder.iii

In an Internet profile he created for isrealinsider.net, AFDI founder John Joseph Jay named "rabbi meir kahna" [sic] as one of his "heroes and inspirations in life."iv This is an obvious reference to Rabbi Meir Kahane, the founder of the groups Kach and Kahane Chai, which have been listed as designated foreign terrorist organizations by the U.S. Department of State.

Jay has in the past called for the killing of all Muslims. He wrote: "[T]here are no innocent muslims. islam is subject to killing on grounds of political expediency on the same basis as islam kills its victims, and islam cannot ethically and morally claim otherwise." [Note: Grammatical errors in the original text have been maintained.]v

In 2011, Geller published a book titled Stop the Islamization of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance. The book offers step-by-step instructions on how to stop mosque construction in American communities. The book called Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and CNN and ABC News anchor Christiane Amanpour “Stealth Jihadists” and warned against possible “secret halal meat” prepared in school lunches. Geller also uses the book to promote her campaign against the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque” and her proposed series of ads encouraging Muslims to leave Islam.vi

In Pamela Geller’s Own Words

Geller calls Islam the most “extreme ideology on the face of the Earth”
"Islam is not a race. This is an ideology. This is an extreme ideology, the most radical and extreme ideology on the face of the earth." -On Fox Business' Follow the Money, 3/10/2011

Geller justifies 2011 anti-Islam massacre in Norway
Breivik was targeting the future leaders of the party responsible for flooding Norway with Muslims who refuse to assimilate, who commit major violence against Norwegian natives, including violent gang rapes, with impunity, and who live on the dole... all done without the consent of the Norwegians.”vii
-Atlas Shrugs blog post cited at Andrew Sullivan’s The Dish, 8/01/2011

Note the faces which are more MIddle [sic] Eastern or mixed than pure Norwegian.”viii

Geller says “Hitler was inspired by Islam”
"Hitler was inspired by Islam."ix
-Interview on Russian Television’s The Alonya Show, 8/03/2010

Geller promotes conspiracy theory that Muslim groups ‘control information’ at CIA, FBI and various Department of Defense outlets
According to Geller, Muslim groups "control information and how it is processed at senior levels of the CIA, the FBI, the Pentagon, and the various branches of the military.”x
-Atlas Shrugs blog post, 2/10/2010

Geller promotes conspiracy theory that President Obama is a Muslim
“He spent three weeks in Pakistan in his college days at Occidental in 1981…Back in the early 80's, there were only two reasons to travel to Pakistan. Jihad or drugs. I think he went for the drugs and came back with jihad.xi (He did, after all, change his name to Barack Hussein Obama from Barry Soetoro, upon his return from that trip).”
-Atlas Shrugs blog post, 8/1/09

Geller says she ‘loves’ Marines who desecrated corpses
“I love these Marines. Perhaps this is the infidel interpretation of the Islamic ritual of washing and preparing the body for burial.”xii
-Atlas Shrugs blog post, 1/11/2012, after the revelation that U.S. Marines had allegedly desecrated Afghan corpses by urinating on them. By contrast, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta called it "utterly deplorable."xiii

What Others Say About Pamela Geller

Hate group monitor says Geller “relentlessly shrill and coarse in her broad-brush denunciations of Islam”

Reclaiming Ownership of a “Name in Joint Custody”

Those who read the newspapers (hard copy or online), watch the news on television or on the Internet may have read or heard about the growing cottage industry of Islamaphobia and the over $40 million funding it receives. Those who follow the news may be aware of the names of those who perpetrate themselves to be “experts” in the realm of Islam, Islamic studies or (though unrelated) terrorist training. We've recently witnessed how an Islamic civil rights organization (the Council on American-Islamic Relations – CAIR) saved the American taxpayers an unknown sum of tax dollars by pointing out to the military and federal agencies that these perpetrators masquerading as “experts” were bilking Americans out of whatever fees that they are charging them for ineffective, bigoted and flawed “so-called terrorist training”. Of course, these frauds had and have nothing nice or truthful to say about CAIR, as they've exposed them for the frauds that they are.

CAIR is one of many U.S. Islamic organizations that is deep in the battle against bigotry against Muslims, in particular, other U.S. minorities, in general. Yes, they do speak out and loudly when there are cases of discrimination against Muslims. But they also do the same when a Jewish synagogue was vandalized in Olney, MD in 2011. They also spoke out against the violence when a White supremacist opened fire in a Sikh temple in 2012. More recently, they spoke out against the Afghan government who was holding a mentally challenged 12-year old girl on blasphemy charges. What we notice is that while the Islamaphobia network constantly and consistently make outlandish and false statements against CAIR, they have never acknowledged them making such public stances as they've taken when the victim is (or victims are) non-Muslim.

The Islamaphobia network even attacks Muslim college students who join the college student group for Muslims (Muslim Student Alliance). They claim that it and all Islamic organizations are created by and a part of the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization that the U.S. has defined as a terrorist organization. They've even claimed that the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated high levels of the U.S. government, though they offered not one name or one such infiltrator. Recently, the Islamaphobia network's bogus claims reached the news level and was picked up by the Muslim Brotherhood. The leader of the Muslim laughed as such a silly thought saying, “We're having a hard enough time getting into the Egyptian government. We wouldn't even think about getting into the American government!” Silly Islamaphobes....

In the ongoing battle against these fact-free haters of Islam and Muslims, Muslims have used many descriptive labels in categorizing these people. The most popular and recent coined term is one I've used in this article quite frequently: Islamaphobe. It is derived from the word “Islamaphobia” which is the irrational fear of Islam and anything related to Islam. An Islamaphobe is one who has said irrational fear. But at some point, these people might no longer have an irrational fear of Islam and Muslims, but an irrational hatred of them.

This is why the need for a more encompassing word. And it's not necessary to coin a new word or phrase. We can use a word that is already in common use. Let's look at a similar group and how they were treated in the U.S. and in Europe. Of course, we know that the Jews were demeaned and mistreated in Europe and when they immigrated to America. Eventually, the word “antisemitic” was assigned to those who showed their hatred or despise towards Jews or anything related to them. But let's examine the meaning of this word.

Of course we know that the prefix, anti, means “to be against”. But the word Semite does not mean “Jewish”. It actually means “a member of any of the peoples of Semitic languages, cultures or religions including the Hebrews, Arabs, Assyrians, Phoenicians, etc.” So, to strictly assign Semitic to be mean Jewish only is actually an omission of many peoples. As a Muslim, I hereby reclaim part of that which is rightfully mine! I am a Semite along with others who are also considered to be Semites. No one group of Semites has any more ownership of the word than anyone else who is Semitic.

Technically speaking, by people showing or having hatred toward and/or promoting lies against Islam and/or Muslims, they are being antisemitic! So, even if people do deny being Islamaphobes, they can't continue hating and lying against Islam and Muslims without being classified anti-Semites. I only wonder how those who claim to be Jewish who are supportive of the Islamaphobia network will feel realizing that they, too, can be considers anti-Semites, even though their hate and lies aren't directed toward Jews.

Sacrificed Survivors
The Untold Story of the Ground Zero Mosque

An organization called the “Christian Action Network” sought out the surviving family members of the 9/11 victims who blamed (and still blame) Islam and all Muslims for the 9/11 terrorist acts. Why were these the only people sought after by this group and what is the goal of this so-called “Christian Action Network”? Are they spreading the message of Christianity? The Christian Action Network, or CAN, is actual one of many quasi-religious, radical, right-wing arm of the over $40 million Islamaphobic network whose overall goal is to defame and slander Islam and its followers, the Muslims.

With the funding and creation of this film. “Sacrificed Survivors – The Untold Story of the Ground Zero Mosque”, they are picking up the ball where paid Islamaphobe, Pamela Geller left off. Geller is a radical, right-wing blogger who is very intertwined in the whole charade of defaming Islam and Muslims, “whom she loves”, as her empty claims go. Geller is given the credit for creating the lie that The Cordoba House as a “mega mosque” and a “triumphal mosque” in a failed attempt to link the suicide terrorists of 9/11 infamy to an unaffiliated group of Muslims. The Cordoba House was renamed Park 51 by its owners as they saw how sensitive that the opponents were to the name of this project. It made no difference to Geller and her supporters. Once the mainstream media began to pick up the story from her blog and the misnomer, “ground zero mosque”, they began to mimic this misnomer.

Two points that the reader should be made aware of regarding this building project.

  1. Park 51 is an Islamic Community Center, much like a YMCA. Of its planned 13 stories, only the top two are planned to be reserved for a mosque. That equates to 15% of the building dedicated to being a mosque. The lion's share of the building will house a full basketball court, a workout gym (complete with free-weights and other fitness equipment), a swimming pool (not a “foot bath” for washing feet before prayer), a 500-seat theater, a culinary school, an Islamic Cultural Center, an inter-faith prayer room and a 9/11 memorial. Geller and her supporters never mention any of these entities, particularly the 9/11 memorial...and this is all public information.

  2. Secondly, Park 51 is 2½ blocks away from the nearest corner of the World Trade Center property. While Geller hastily informs people during hotel meetings and anti-mosque/anti-Islam rallies that the owners of Park 51 bought the property at 45 Park Place, she intentionally omits the fact that they were initially in the process of purchasing a property several blocks away, but that deal fell through. It wasn't until later that they were made aware that the property at 45 Park Place was available. In fact, I was informed that there were X-rated “peep shows” closer to the World Trade Center property than Park 51! Yet, none of the opponents of Park 51 have made the same vocal effort to have these establishments shut down because they “view the entire area as hallowed ground”.

Enter the Christian Action Network. They along with the producer of the film, “Sacrificed Survivors” wanted to raise monies (i.e. they want their cut of the Islamaphobic network pie) from the Islamaphobic hype drummed up and concocted by such infamous people as Pam Geller and her ilk. There would be no “two sides to the story” in order for them to ride the manufactured wave of hysteria. In the process of selecting families and friends of those who had died as a result of the terrorist attack of 9/11, they only chose to interview those who connected (in their own minds) the terrorist attack with Islam and Muslims. There were many non-Muslims who rightfully held those responsible who actually committed that heinous act; not Islam, not every Muslim on the planet and certainly, not American Muslims! There were also Muslim family members and friends who lost loved ones in that tragic event. While the film producer deviously interviewed two men with Middle-eastern/Indian accents (who, like everyone else interviewed, also blamed Islam and Muslims for this terrible tragedy), the reader should know that not all people with Middle-eastern/Indian accents are Muslim nor are they necessarily Islam-savvy. Many, particularly in the U.S. are Christians. Sadly, because they have those accents, one might assume that the poor definitions that they give for Arabic terms are accurate. Madrassa, they say means “Islamic school” (it actually just means “school” in the Arabic language) .

The irony is, if Muslims made a like rebuttal film featuring Muslims and others who truly support the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment (which promotes freedom of religion), then the opponents of Park 51 would view the movie as biased, they'll mislabel the non-Muslims as un-American, “dhimmis” (non-Muslims living in Islamic countries who are not required to join the military, but pay a tax to support said military), “terror-supporting”, “Islamofascist” and other made-up, disrespectful vernacular.

I feel sorry for the survivors who lost loved ones in the terrorist attacks of 9/11. For a couple of years, I made myself available to speak at inter-faith sermons and meetings to explain how this terrorist act had nothing to do with Islam. I heard many Islamic leaders in the United States and elsewhere apologizing and differentiating Islam from the terrorist attacks (remember there were 4 planes and 3 different states attacked – NY – 2, PA – 1 & VA -1. Those outside of the DC Metro area assume that the Pentagon is in DC; it isn't). One young lady who graduated from my high school a year after I did was killed in the Pentagon attack. Though he was uninjured, my brother in-law worked at the Pentagon and we couldn't reach him until after 11 pm that evening. During my 25-year high school reunion, I learned that one of my classmates was visiting the World Trade Center that day and helped to evacuate it after the first plane struck the first tower. When they were given the “all clear”, he refused and kept evacuating people from the second tower until the second plane struck. That's when he, too, left the area. In the meantime, his wife (like my brother in-law and schoolmate) was working in the Pentagon. By the grace of God, she, too, survived, uninjured. I came to realize that the time for apologizing for something I hadn't done wrong was over. For years, I kept hearing the lie the Muslims (sometimes, “moderate Muslims”) were not speaking out against this vile act of terrorism. They were clueless to the fact the even during the attacks as news media was covering the Twin Tower footage (before the buildings fell), Yasser Arafat (whom U.S. citizens were brainwashed to dislike/hate) called then-President Bush to express his condolences and condemn that vile act. This was reported during the 10 o'clock hour. From that point forward, Muslim leaders and Muslim organizations were chiming in with Yasser Arafat.....publicly. Chances are, those who didn't hear them were limiting themselves to getting all of their information from the right-wing media and their Islamaphobic spin/leaning..

This tragedy struck more than just those in the lower Manhattan area of New York City. This tragedy struck and affected everyone in the eastern region of the United States, directly, the whole country, indirectly. Tim Brown (former firefighter interviewed in this film) is a hypocrite by proclaiming that the “only people who should talk about 'ground zero' are those who lost loved ones”. He is interviewed sporadically throughout the film. He blames a general “them”, not ever saying terrorists or Muslims. He also says “them” when referring to the owners of Park 51, in that same, vain attempt to connect the unconnected. Then (here's the hypocrisy), at the end of the film, he sheepishly looks into the camera appealing for those of us who he (in so many words, told us that we have no say in the matter) to join them in the anti-Islamic, anti-American, anti-U.S. Constitutional cause and rally against an unrelated organization's effort to build a community center on their own private property.

This film featured interviews from paid Islamaphobes, members of infamously anti-Islamic organizations, groups listed as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center and a news clip from a former speaker of the House and failed GOP presidential candidate (who made anti-Islamic statements during his failed campaign run). There were Christians who lost loved ones who don't blame Islam or all Muslims that they could have interviewed. The Muslim families and friends who lost Muslim loved ones could have been interviewed. These people actually want Park 51 to be built the show the difference between terrorism & the killing of innocent people and Islam. They want the memories of their Muslim family member to be differentiated from the un-Islamic misdeeds of the terrorists.

I almost feel sorry for construction worker Andrew Sullivan who was also interviewed for the attack-film-against-Islam. While he was just as biased in his baseless attacks against Islam like everyone in the video who blamed Islam and all Muslims for 9/11, he later had a falling out with the CAN who neglected to pay for his plane ticket and missed work to show up at an out-of-state event where they were spreading their message of hatred, division and misinformation. Again, CAN's goal is to pack rooms with paying attendees to hear the perspectives of these interviewees, not to promote the truth.

Throughout this film, many of those interviewed make the weakest comparisons between the terrorists and Muslims. At no time do they cite how any of the owners of Park 51 were involved with the terrorists involved or their misdeeds of the 9/11 attacks. They also, spent a good portion of this film trying to make Muslims seem un-American/anti-American, in yet another attempt to make them “outsiders”. In his closing remarks, Tim Brown says that he wants people to know about the first responders to this tragedy. Now, if they did speak to one of those surviving first responders, he would give a much different story than the lies, exaggerations and blame-game rubbish being touted in this film. This first responder was a Muslim firefighter. He is featured in a YouTube video and speaks in support of Park 51 and he speaks against the terrorist acts of 9/11 and how it was un-Islamic for them to commit that act. But these people wouldn't use that footage. The minute he said, “I am Muslim”, that interview footage would have been left on the editing floor.

In hindsight, I find it fittingly ironic that the producer of this film entitled it “Sacrificed Survivors” because that is exactly what they and CAN did. They, literally, sacrificed the surviving family of those who died in the 9/11 tragedy all in the name of defaming Islam. They allowed them to make invalid connections between the terrorists and a group of Muslims that didn't even know those terrorists, let alone support them! They offered no correction were most of their statements were in desperate need of correction. This story (READ:LIE) is actually an “over-told” lie about a community center that is at least 2½ blocks away from the WTC grounds and CAN's attempts to vilify the owners, Muslims and Islam. After coming to these rational conclusions, I'm starting to wonder if the Christian Action Network really care about these people at all or if they were only interested in their bottom line! Neither they nor their actions don't appear to model after Christ or his actions.

The Deceptive Re-translation and Re-assignment of Islamic Terms by Islamaphobes

Many Islamaphobes use (or rather, abuse) Arabic words because there are many non-Arab speaking westerners (including myself) who are unfamiliar with the words that they use and abuse for their own devious intentions.  This is a special motivation for the paid Islamaphobes who are actually paid to lie against Islam and Muslims. We have recently seen such example of these paid Islamaphobes giving misleading and anti-Islamic training to the military and law enforcement officials (from local to federal level) while receiving tax-payers’ dollars for providing said flawed training. Fortunately, Muslim civil rights organizations brought scam this to the attention of the FBI and the Pentagon and they have since ceased their involvement with such nefarious tricksters. But this does not prevent these same con artists from deceiving as many of the masses as they can.

Before I go any further, allow me to not be too presumptuous and define a few of the terms I’ve used so far.
  1. Islamaphobia (Is.laam.uh.fō’.bi.uh):  the irrational fear of Islam and/or anything related to it.
  2. Islamaphobe (Is.laam.uh.fōb’):  one who has the aforementioned irrational fear.
  3. Muslim (Mus.lim -Arabic): one who submits their will to do the will of God.
There!  I don’t want to leave those words open to misinterpretation. These same people will claim that “Islamists” (a disrespectful term they use instead of stating “Muslims”) use the terms Islamaphobia & Islamaphobe to negate any discussion on Islam & Muslims. Ironically, those descriptive words are used no more frequently than those used to describe others who are prejudiced and discriminatory against the Jewish community (anti-Semitic).  Ironically, the root word applies to more than just Jews or Judaism!

            Semitic (Se.mi’.tic):
a)   of, relating to, or constituting a subfamily of the Afro-Asiatic language family that includes Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic and Amharic
b)   of, relating to, or characteristic of the Semites
c)   relating to Jewish people

As you can see, being “strictly Jewish” is the third most populate definition due to an interpretation whereas the first two definitions could be obviously applied to Christians and Muslims. But that’s a sidebar…. But how a word that relates to so many diverse groups of people could possibly be narrowed-down to only refer to only one group is beyond reason!

A prime example of abuse of words is the word “taqiyya”.

Taqiyya (tah.kee’.ah):  permission to hide one’s faith if threatened with bodily injury or death; strictly Shia Muslim practice.

In the Middle East, two sects of Muslims (Sunni – majority and Shia – minority) are at odds with one another, primarily over a differences of opinion of leadership and some practices. Too often, these differences devolve into violent clashes. In a majority Sunni area, Shia Muslims adopted the practice of not claiming to be Shia if questioned. This is the only example of taqiyya and it has no other application.

Here’s how Islamaphobes negate and devise their own definition of the word.  They lie by claiming that taqiyya means to “lie to spread Islam”.  This practice, if it was as they claim, would be completely and utterly contrary to Islam, itself. This claim also negates any meaningful conversation any Muslim could possibly have with anyone in disputing these lies spewed by Islamaphobes. So, when a Muslim debunks the lies told by the paid Islamaphobe (or one of their dupes), the dupes think, “…..oh yeah…!  This is that practice I was trained on called ‘taqiyya’ where Muslims will lie to spread Islam, so I can simply ignore their statements”! But most paid/professional Islamaphobes know that they've been

Another similar abuse of Arabic words is the mistranslation of the word “Sharia”.

Sharia (Sha.ree’.ah):  “the path” or “the way”.

Sharia is derived from the teachings of the Qur’an, the sunnah, or practices of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. Islamaphobes mistranslate sharia to mean “the laws of Islam”. They fail to acknowledge that when considering all predominantly Muslim-populated countries (notice I didn’t say “Islamic countries”), the laws are all different.  But these Islamaphobes ignore this, but take the most extreme practices (beheading, amputation, belittling of women, etc.) and claim these abuses as “sharia”. In the meantime, they never mention that in the United States, Muslim Americans marry, divorce, raise their children, write their wills, pray five times per day (minimum), wash before prayers, etc. all based on sharia.  Where does the beheading come into play there….?  Exactly….!  NOWHERE!

So why do we hear and read all of the hype from the Islamaphobes?  As long as they invent an imaginary “boogeyman” (sharia) and get paid for said promoting of said irrational fear (Islamaphobia), they can promote and push for the banning of “sharia law” in different states. Some states Republicans are even crafty enough to remove the word “sharia” from their proposed legislation and replacing it with “foreign” laws or “religious” laws.

Fortunately, even many in the Jewish American community is seeing this as an attack on them and their practices as well as they govern themselves by similar practices which are derived from the Torah (the Jewish scripture). They have joined with Muslims in speaking out against such banning of religious-based practices as promoted by these legislators and in most states; these measures have been soundly defeated!

We can only thank God for that, but the battle against evil continues.

The So-called "Oppressed" Religion in the USA

Lately, many so-called Christians have been claiming that "Christianity is under attack!! and that "....we, Christians, are being oppressed!!

How over-dramatic & unrealistic is that??!!

So-called Christians claim:  WE'RE OPPRESSED!!

The rest of sane Americans ask:  BY WHOM??!!
